The Importance of Clean Water

"One child dies every 15 seconds, every single day, from water-related illnesses. Almost a billion people do not have access to safe water and 2.5 billion lack basic sanitation. At any one time, half of the world's hospital beds are occupied by patients suffering from water-borne diseases. It kills more people than malaria, AIDS, and TB combined with a catastrophic result: 2 million, most preventable deaths, every year."

The Intervention That Gets the Most Bang for the Buck

"Girls' education may be the single most cost-effective kind of aid work. It's cheap, it opens minds, it gives new career opportunities and ways to generate cash, it leads them to have fewer children and invest more in those children, and it tends to bring women from the shadows into the formal economy and society. It's not a panacea...but overall, educating girls probably has a greater transformative effect on a country than anything else one can do."
